When I came across pictures of these severed finger cookies on the internet, I just couldn’t resist making them. Normally I don’t do gory – I abhor horror movies and behave like a five-year old when watching them, covering my eyes during the scary scenes and asking people around me, “is it over yet?” But when I read the recipe I thought – wow, I bet these are actually pretty tasty. They remind me of a recipe for Russian tea cakes {also known as Mexican wedding cakes} that my mom has made for as long as I can remember {my favorite cookies – recipe to come!} – a meltingly delicious dough made with confectioner’s sugar instead of granulated sugar. I adapted this recipe slightly by using 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract {I like the flavor almond extract imparts – I find it more subtly fragrant than vanilla extract}. These little fingers, though grotesque, are frighteningly good. Happy Halloween!
